A group of sexual, gender and human rights activists presented their Annual Report on the State of Homophobia in Burundi, together with a film screening at the country’s only LGBT centre. Meanwhile, a different organisation, in one of Burundi’s rural towns, also organised a community meeting and event around the IDAHOT 2014.

Further details are limited for potential security reasons. In Burundi same sex relationships between men, and between women, are outlawed and punishable with up to two years imprisonment.

On May 17, to mark the International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia, a coalition of organisations defending sexual minorities in Burundi launched a powerful new short documentary. The 25 minute film is structured around telling the stories of different LGBT people in Burundi. Activists also conducted specific awareness raising activities in the rural cities of Gitega, Muramvya, Mwaro, Rutana and Ruyigi. In Burundi, anti-homosexuality legislation was only just recently toughened, with sentences ranging potentially as far as life imprisonment.
The video was produced by a coalition of organisations defending sexual minorities in Burundi (Humure,
Moli, RCL and TWW).

You can view it in full here:

(In French only for now)

Furthermore, the organisation MUCO w’urwaruka organised a conference bringing together key stakeholders to discuss national strategies to promote the Human Rights of sexual minorities under the theme ‘Homophobia + Criminalisation = Vulnerability’, underlining the dramatic impact criminalisation of same-sex relationships has on HIV infection amongst Men who have Sex with Men.

With financial support from the IDAHO Committee, the Organisation MUCO renewed its IDAHO mobilization activities in the rural areas of Burundi. It organized social activities bringing together members of sexual minorities, their friends and families, over discussions on how to mobilize allies in the fight against homophobia and transphobia. The Day also provided the opportunity for the organization to conduct a field research on the lived experiences of Human Rights abuses on ground of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression in rural Burundi.
