Desde hace ocho años que en Cuba se lleva a cabo anualmente la Jornada contra la Homofobia y la Transfobia. Lo que comenzó siendo una actividad pequeña de un día, hoy se ha convertido en actividades a lo largo y ancho del país durante más de dos semanas.

La VIII Jornada Cubana contra la Homofobia y la Transfobia fue inaugurada el pasado 5 de mayo hasta el sábado 23 del mismo mes. Impulsada desde su primera edición en 2007 por el Centro Nacional de Educación Sexual (Cenesex), este año contó por primera vez con la participación de la Central de Trabajadores de Cuba (CTC).

Esta adhesión de la central obrera cubana va en sintonía con el lema de la Jornada de este año: “Por espacios laborales más inclusivos” buscando hacer carne la legislación establecida por el nuevo Código de Trabajo aprobado en diciembre de 2013. Esta es la primera ley cubana que protege de forma explícita derechos de las personas no heterosexuales estableciendo la no discriminación en el ámbito laboral.

Mas de 30 parejas de gays y de lesbianas fueron bendecidas por pastores  protestantes, que se han sumado al activismo por los derechos sexuales en esta isla caribeña y participan en la VIII Jornada Cubana contra la Homofobia y la Transfobia. 

El culto ecuménico abierto a un público diverso en el habanero Pabellón Cuba en el marco de esta jornada, selló el compromiso de algunos sectores progresistas cristianos en la lucha por legitimar estas uniones, altamente discriminadas y sin reconocimiento legal en el país.

“Son grupos que están trabajando dentro de las propias iglesias para motivar un discurso inclusivo, respetuoso y de amor”, declaró la sexóloga Mariela Castro.

For the last seven years, the celebration of May 17 in Cuba has been organized by the group CENESEX (National Center for Sexual Education). In 2014 as in previous years, events around the IDAHOT spread out into a month of festivities, with countless events taking place and high level public figures participating in the commemorations.

The series of events for 2014 was aimed at promoting and defending people’s rights to be free, and to enjoy their sexual orientation and gender identity. Whilst actions provided a space for art, knowledge exchange and fun, they also constituted a reaffirmation of Cuban sexual and human rights activism.

In the eastern province of Granma, the Cuban Day Against Homophobia 2014 welcomed sexual rights activists who came from different regions of the island, under the slogan: “Home is love, respect, inclusion, family-free of homophobia and transphobia.”

In early May, the VI Regional Conference of the International Lesbian, Gay, Trans and Intersex for Latin America and the Caribbean (ILGALAC) was also held, as a preliminary activity in which the particular realities of life for LGBTI people in different regions of Latin America were presented and discussed by different community participants.

La jornada cubana contra la homofobia tuvo su sede en la oriental provincia de Granma, quien acogió a activistas en derechos sexuales llegados desde distintas regiones de la Isla y reunidos bajo el lema: Hogar es amor, respeto, inclusión, por una familia libre de homofobia y transfobia.

A gala against homophobia was held at the Karl Marx theatre. Among the guests this year were international experts such as the British sociologist Jeffrey Weeks and the Mexican sexologist Rinna Riesenfeld. A high profile IDAHO conference was held, as well as a main activity in the province of Ciego de Avila, on May 17 – a large scale demonstration which evidenced the ‘sexual diversity of the island and the wish that more Cubans can freely exercise their sexual orientation or gender identity.’ The year’s commemorations were also marked, on May 14, with a parade though the streets of Havana. Once again Mariela Castro, the daughter of Cuba’s president Raul Castro, led the parade out, and affirmed that more must be done to raise awareness about lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender people.

Reconocidas personalidades de la ciencia, la cultura y el deporte participarán en la VI Jornada cubana contra la homofobia, a celebrarse del 7 al 18 de mayo próximo, programada por el Centro Nacional de Educación Sexual (Cenesex).

The main IDAHO activities were held in Havana and Cien Fuegos in partnership with the Ministry of Superior Education in an attempt to address sexual education and the promotion of sexual health and rights in all of the country’s universities.

In addition, an extensive program of events was held with participation from storytellers, artists, painters, film and video makers, researchers, musicians and experts in the arts with the aim of promoting LGBTI equality in Cuba. It included the launch of an anthology of lesbian stories entitled “Us Two”, as well as a panel on homoerotism and the screening of videos, photographs and films about sexual diversity.
