No es la primera vez que el presidente Obama realiza una declaración para IDAHOT durante su mandato, tiene como antecedente un mensaje de apoyo realizado en 2014. Además de llamar la atención sobre el día, las palabras del Presidente dan aliento y apoyo a el trabajo duro que hace la comunidad de Estados Unidos para el avance en la igualdad LGBTI.

Michelle and I join our fellow Americans and others around the world in commemorating the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia tomorrow, May 17. We take this opportunity to reaffirm that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights are human rights, to celebrate the dignity of every person, and to underscore that all people deserve to live free from fear, violence, and discrimination, regardless of who they are of whom they love.

We work toward this goal every day. Here at home, we are working to end bias-motivated violence, combat discrimination in the workplace, and address the specific needs of transgender persons. Overseas, I am proud of the steps that the United States has taken to prioritize the protection and promotion of LGBT rights in our diplomacy and global outreach.

There is much more to do, and this fight for equality will not be won in a day. but we will keep working, at home and abroad, and we will keep fighting, for however long it takes until we are all able to live free and equal in dignity and rights.

Michelle y yo nos unimos a nuestros compatriotas estadounidenses y otros alrededor del mundo en la conmemoración del Día Internacional contra la Homofobia y la Transfobia mañana, 17 de mayo. Aprovechamos esta oportunidad para reafirmar que los derechos de lesbianas, gays, bisexuales y transgénero (LGBT) son derechos humanos, celebrar la dignidad de cada persona, y para subrayar que todas las personas merecen vivir libres de miedo, violencia y discriminación, independientemente de quienes son o a quien aman.
Trabajamos hacia esta meta cada día. Aquí en casa, estamos trabajando para poner fin a la violencia motivada por el prejuicio, la lucha contra la discriminación en los lugares de trabajo, y atender las necesidades específicas de las personas transexuales. En el extranjero, me siento orgulloso de las medidas que los Estados Unidos ha adoptado para dar prioridad a la protección y promoción de los derechos LGBT en nuestra diplomacia y difusión global.

Hay mucho más que hacer, y esta lucha por la igualdad no se ganará en un día, pero vamos a seguir trabajando, en casa y en el extranjero, y vamos a seguir luchando, por el tiempo que sea necesario hasta que todos seamos capaces de vivir libres e iguales en dignidad y derechos.

 

Aprovechando el impulso de los videos internacionales, el Proyecto ha implementado programas en beneficio de los jóvenes LGBT en seis continentes. En respuesta a la temática global de IDAHOT 2015 y su enfoque en Jóvenes LGBTI, todos los afiliados IGB han puesto su mayor esfuerzo para ofrecer un amplio programa de acción!

PORTUGAL: Tudo Vai Melhorar  realizara una campaña de “Abrazos Gratis” en las calles de Lisboa y Porto para promover la aceptación y el amor en detrimento de la homofobia y transfobia. MEXICO: Todo Mejora México se encuentra trabajando con la popular YouTuber Victoria Volkóva para lanzar un compilado de vídeos de sus seguidores contando en 20 segundos como todo mejora para ellos cuando no tienen que enfrentar transfobia u homofobia  (se lanzará el 17 de mayo).

ITALIA: Le Cose Cambiano, en cooperación con los estudiantes universitarios de Progetto Prisma y mujeres del Grupo InContrO Liceo Govone, junto a otras organizaciones amigables con las personas LGBT (como Amnistía Internacional) realizarán un flashmob en las calles de Bologna para IDAHOT. Éstos grupos también se reunirán el 19 de mayo para un debate sobre representación LGBT en la tienda de libros YA y el 20 de mayo para celebrar la traducción al italiano del libro de Ian Rivers “Homophobic Bullying”.

CHILE: Todo Mejora lanzará un vídeo musical que producirán con la artista chilena Francisca Valenzuela llamado Insulto, una canción inspiradora sobre la superación del acoso escolar para los jóvenes LGBT (ver el video letras aquí). Junto con GLSEN (una red de educativa basada en los Estados Unidos), Todo Mejora también lanzará la edición en español del Juego de espacio seguro, una guía sobre cómo ser un aliado para los estudiantes LGBT.

MOLDAVIA: Egali será co-anfitrión de una serie de eventos en los días previos a, en, y después de IDAHOT. Estos incluyen el 14a Festival Anual del Orgullo (titulado “Rainbows over Dniester”), la tercera Marcha Anual del Orgullo para la Igualdad, y una conferencia de familias LGBT (titulada “Nuestras familias aquí y ahora”)

BRASIL: Para el IDAHO de este año, Tudo Vai Melhorar Brasil  será co-anfitrión de “De que lado voce samba?,” un evento para resaltar el valor de la cultura y la música brasileña, mientras también se representan los aspectos de la diversidad sexual en la sociedad brasileña. El evento contará con artistas locales, actuaciones musicales, reproducciones de vídeos y exhibiciones de graffiti.

AUSTRIA: Es Wird Besser Osterreich y la Unidad Antidiscriminación para lesbianas, gays, transexuales de la Ciudad de Viena  será el anfitrión de una mesa redonda titulada “Construyendo Puentes para la Juventud LGBT” para IDAHOT. Dan Savage y Terry Miller van a participar en el panel como invitados especiales. Durante su visita al país, también van a participar en una lectura el 19 de mayo y un espacio de prensa – “Café de Derechos Humanos ” – el 20 de mayo.

AUSTRALIA: It Gets Better Australia llevara a cabo It Gets Better LIVE, un evento de multiples actividades encabezado por el grupo populares de chicas, GRL, el 3 de mayo. Ellos estarán dando un llamado para IDAHOT durante las actuaciones y esperan subir una versión grabada del evento en YouTube el 17 de mayo.

In the United States, President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry and Vice-President Joe Biden released statements and tweets of support for the worldwide May 17 mobilisations this year. A nationwide initiative to demand full and equal non-discrimination protections as a human rights imperative co-ordinated a ‘Day of Organising’, with some activity taken around May 17 in 30 states. Particularly strong mobilisations were registered this year in Atlanta in the state of Georgia, Omaha in Nebraska, and New Orleans in Louisiana, with street marches, exhibitions and many other events stretching out around the Day.

In fact, many major LGBTI rights NGOs and campaigns working nationwide in the country marked the Day with statements of support, online campaigns, news articles or other initiatives. A major US-based international anti-bullying campaign launched a major series of campaigns and messages of support on May 17 and mobilised and supported its local affiliates in various countries to take action for the IDAHOT.

Statement by the President on the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

Tomorrow, as we commemorate the 10th annual International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, we recommit ourselves to the fundamental belief that all people should be treated equally, that they should have the opportunity to reach their fullest potential, and that no one should face violence or discrimination — no matter who they are or whom they love.

This year, the United States celebrates the 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, and the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. In doing so, we reflect on lessons learned from our own civil rights struggles and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that the human rights of all people are universally protected.

At a time when, tragically, we are seeing increased efforts to criminalize or oppress LGBT persons, we call on partners everywhere to join us in defending the equal rights of our LGBT brothers and sisters, and in ensuring they are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

Street Exhibition ‘Trans*forming Salt Lake City’ Marks May 17 2013 in Utah

In Portland, Oregon, fans of Portland Timbers Football Club, marked the International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia with a massive rainbow coloured Mexican wave on match day.

Sadly, the night of May 17, 2013 was also marked by the homophobic murder of Mark Carson, a 32-year old gay man, in Greenwich Village, New York City. Thousands of people participated in rallies, marches and vigils held over the following nights to protest against LGBT hate crimes, and to honour his life.

In recognition of IDAHO, the US Department of State informed all of its missions around the world about the Day and provided them with best practices related to supporting LGBT groups. The State Department also supported their employees around the world by hosting panels and discussions in embassies and government facilities.

In Washington DC, about 100 people gathered for the release of the report by Human Rights First “The Road to Safety: Strengthening Protection for LGBTI Refugees in Uganda and Kenya”. The event was presented as the second installment of HRC’s recently launched ’’Equality Talks.’’

Also released were guidelines to access US embassies, entitled “Accessing US Embassies: A Guide for LGBT Human Rights Defenders” which highlighted the various diplomatic tools that US embassies used to advance a range of human rights and development objectives, from diplomatic “démarches” to support for LGBT refugees. It also looked at various opportunities that exist for US embassies to support, both technically and financially, LGBT advocates in host countries.

Activists also held a free screening of the independent film “Gun Hill Road” which was followed by a discussion about issues of gender, family and culture.

There were three days of IDAHO events held in Atlanta: A Church Without Walls service and potluck picnic; Alternative Perspectives; and presentations of the proclamations speakers and entertainment.

On June 2, Division 52 co-sponsored a symposium to honor International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO). The symposium, chaired by Dr. Neal Rubin, gathered faculty, students, and others at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology to reflect on current conditions for LGBT persons around the world.

In addition, activists in New York City hosted representatives from two Caribbean-based grantee organizations, who shared their experiences and discussed homophobia and transphobia among Caribbean populations and participated in a panel discussion with representatives from UN member states to identify strategies for increasing access to HIV services among gay men, other MSM, and transgender individuals. The activists also announced nine awards to groups combatting HIV/AIDS among MSM.

The City of San Francisco marked IDAHO by lowering the UN and American flags for 24 hours at UN Plaza.
