Color Rainbow reports from Yangon

“Colors Rainbow’s biggest support came from different donors who have been involved with Colors Rainbow for a few years already. In addition foreign Embassies to Myanmar as well as UN agencies contributed funds (European Union for example) and raised the rainbow flag for the whole day. In total the rainbow flag flew in more than 25 locations throughout Yangon while every embassy, organization and embassy posted on Facebook a picture of their flag and staff with a supporting text! This double campaign was really powerful! We collected pictures of the flags on Colors Rainbow’s Facebook page and made an album of all these contributions. It was nice to see the support that drew online.

Regarding the concrete event, we had fund-raised for the organization of IDAHOBIT since the previous year. We chose a very well attended location, Myanmar Plaza, which is a famous, easy-to-access shopping mall. We then worked with different partners and in particular the &PROUD team (yearly LGBT Film Festival) to reach out to the community. With them, we established a list of discussions, performances and movies we could feature on this day. Many talented individuals agreed to support the organization of the event and perform on stage. We also invited six partner organizations working on gender equality, human rights, HIV/AIDS, etc. LGBT advocates from different fields to have a booth and distribute promotional and awareness raising materials and present their work.

In parallel, the French Embassy, on behalf of the European Union, had funds and offered to screen the movie “120 beats per minute” on the night before IDAHOT in cooperation with Colors Rainbow. The movie didn’t pass the government censorship so we decided to screen it at the French Institute, which is considered as a private location. The movie was followed by a discussion on activism. Speakers were former Act Up activists (French and British) now both working for the their respective governments and younger Burmese activists (Colors Rainbow and Equality Myanmar, two Burmese organizations promoting Human Rights in the country).

On IDAHOT day, more than 2000 people attended the event throughout the day (we started at 13:30 and finished at 20:30). Colors Rainbow distributed rainbow pin’s, stickers, key chains etc. and a lot of brochures and magazines we are producing. We also sold T-shirts and rainbow scarves.

In addition, we supported IDAHOT events organized by LGBT Rights organizations throughout the country. In total eleven cities across Myanmar organized an IDAHOT celebration with performances from the community.

IDAHOT 2018 t was a great success thanks to the solidarity, involvement and dedication of the community. We managed to make this event theirs. And they felt brave and proud to show who they are to the world!”

Justice and Protection for All

Over the past decades, protection of LGBTQI+ people and all people with diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions or sex characteristics has greatly expanded. This progress is well worth celebrating, and this is why May 17th is also, and maybe foremost, a day for celebration.

But in many places around the world, LGBTQI+ people still face injustice and live in fear and danger, sometimes for their very lives, as was obvious in the case of Tanzania just recently.

The latest ILGA global report on State-Sponsored homophobia lists 72 states that still criminalize same-sex sexual relations. In 45 of these States the law is applied to women as well as men. Many more States restrict the freedom of speech on gender and sexual diversities, or put other forms of legal pressure.

On the other hand, only 63 States provide some form of anti-discrimination protection and in some places, initial progress in Justice has been followed by regression.

This is why more legal and policy reforms are necessary to ensure Justice and Protection for all LGBTQI+ people.

But they alone cannot do everything. While social climates have in some places become better over the years, making people feel safer in their societies, in other places violence, including killings, and stigma have actually increased. Authoritarian and fascist regimes are on the rise and threaten Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and we witness a worrying rise in attempts to whip up moral panics and to scapegoat LGBTQI+ people. And people with diverse gender identities or expressions are still the main targets of social violence and injustice.

On May 17th, individuals, organisations, institutions, corporations, etc. will speak out against LGBTIQI+phobias, continuing our collective journey towards societies that ensure justice and protection for all. In a fair and just world, no one shall be left behind!

Note on Global Focus issues: Each year a large consultation among activists takes place to identify one issue that is considered by most as a priority. But this focus issue is by no means the only possible focus for May 17 mobilisations. Everybody should feel totally free to pursue whichever objective they hold at heart.

Reporting on events by KAOS GL:

There is an ongoing state of emergency in Turkey as well as a ban on LGBTI events in Ankara, LGBTI organizations and initiatives are under great pressure to organize such events and demonstrations. But still there are many events organized across Turkey:

KaosGL released a press statement regarding the ongoing bans against LGBTI+ demonstrations and assemblies, drawing attention to hate speech in the media, discrimination against LGBTI+ individuals in employment, and increased impunity against hate crimes. (Read the statement through this link.) KaosGL has also published an ad celebrating the day in the national dailies Birgün and Evrensel, as seen on the featured image of this article, raising the rainbow flag in print media. The ad reads: “Happy IDAHOBIT, with wishes for equality and freedom!” Yıldız Tar from KaosGL also attended the panel organized at the Dutch Embassy in Ankara, together with Gökkuşağı Aileleri Grubu and Maruf, an association from the Netherlands.

Kaos GL had to move its annual symposium organized in dedication to the Day to İzmir: http://kaosgl.org/page.php?id=25921 (english)

SPoD (Social Policies, Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Studies Association) organized a week-long celebration of IDAHOBIT. On May 19th, SPoD hosted a discussion with gaycities.com editor and independent journalist Tony Taylor, and on May 17th the association held a panel at the Istanbul Consulate of the Netherlands together with activists Simon Timmerman from COC (Netherlands) and Ida Ali Lindqvist from RFSL (Sweden), where participants shared their experiences in LGBTI+ activism. On May 20th, SPoD called everyone to join a picnic at Maçka Demokrasi Park to strengthen solidarity and to unwind a little.

Bursa Özgür Renkler Derneği (Free Colors Association) welcomed IDAHOBIT 2018 with various events, including a training session on May 7 at Uludağ University; a gathering to recruit new volunteers on May 16th; and a special forum titled, “Civil Society Gathering for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Equality” on May 17th, bringing together 13 civil society organizations.

BİZ Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Studies Association organized a film screening followed by a panel to honour the day in Antalya.

Several local governance bodies and foreign embassies celebrated IDAHOBIT as well. While the Belgian, German, British, Danish, Dutch, Swedish and Canadian embassies hung the rainbow flag on their building, Ankara’s Çankaya Municipality, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Women’s Studies Directorate and Şişli Municipality celebrated by sharing solidarity messages. The Union of Education and Science Labourers and Confederation of Public Employees Trade Unions did not forget to support the struggle against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia and shared social media posts demanding an end to discrimination.
Amnesty International Turkey posted special illustrations for IDAHOBIT 2018 with the captions “Love is a human right!”, while Human Rights Association (İHD) reminded social media users that LGBTI+ rights are human rights in their solidarity message.

Publishing houses were also among those who shared messages of solidarity for May 17th. Ayrıntı, Sel and Notabene publishing houses, known for printing LGBTI+ literature, honored the day through their social media accounts.

IDAHOTB is a key annual landmark for Unity – EY’s professional network for LGBT+ professionals and their allies. Unity has more than 4,600 members globally, hailing from all four of EY’s geographic Areas (Americas, Asia-Pacific, EMEIA [Europe, Middle East, India and Africa] and Japan).

To mark IDAHOTB, Unity holds an annual global photographic competition, which is open to all EY people around the world. Called ‘Colors of the Rainbow’ the competition has six categories, each linked to one of the colors of the rainbow Pride flag. This is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness and to engage allies. EY also mobilised all country offices to show support and solidarity. Each region was asked to publish a newsletter article on Wednesday 17thMay to show support for the day, which featured messages of support from key EY leaders, including their global chairman and CEO.

In London EY hosted two IDAHOTB events. On 16thMay they hosted an afternoon conference called ‘Making it real – Driving LGBT+ inclusion’. This event included panels debates on topics including allies and sharing LGBT+ workplace best practice, together with a keynote speech from Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, Co-founder and Director of UK Black Pride.
Then on the evening of 17thMay, IDAHOTB itself, EY hosted an evening reception to exhibit the winning and highly commended photographs from the ‘Colors of the Rainbow’ competition.

Also on 17thMay, EY’s Global Vice-Chair for Public Policy, Beth Brooke-Marciniak, took part in the United Nations ‘Special Event to Celebrate Allies’ at UN Head Quarters in New York to mark IDAHOTB.

EY also updated its ‘Making it real – Globally’ document, a practical guide for organizations who want to better deliver LGBT+ workplace equality at a global level (and a good starting point for organisations who have, like EY, signed-up to the United Nations’ LGBTI Standards of Conduct for Business).

The theme adopted for the national IDAHOT 2018 celebration was: “Togetherness for Inclusion.” Some of the LGBTI persons also had the opportunity to share personal experiences and stories about discrimination and stigmatization, and how these have adversely affected their personal lives.

Interviews were held with a selection of actors who comprised of human rights activists, religious leaders, journalists, and LGBTI persons, soliciting their personal opinions on the significance of IDAHOTB 2018 celebrations in Liberia.

Unfortunately, this media coverage sparked negative reactions that led to the relocation of the May 17 Conference.

However, the official national event for IDAHOTB 2018 was held with a stakeholder engagement, which brought together religious leaders both from the Christian and Muslim communities, media practitioners, health care workers and service providers, human rights defenders and activists, partners including heads of LGBTI organizations and LGBTI individuals.

Report From Sally Goldner’s own private (and mostly public!) IDAHOBIT

So May 17th is behind us for another year.

It was, here in the land of Vegemite sandwiches, the first May with marriage equality – this gives some cause for celebration of achievement and some a reminder that there are still many rivers to cross.

Wednesday 16th the mighty Mellem and I tag-teamed out at IPC Health in Hoppers Crossing in Melbourne’s south-western suburbs in a sort of personal story/Q and A (a nice Q and A, not like the one on Monday nights) for 2 sessions with staff. Lots of coverage of diverse stuff and trying to speak for who wasn’t in the room. A great reception. (Lots of other rainbow peeps were at other IPC sites during the week too).

The day itself began with a session at Department of Environment, Water, Land and Planning for the Victorian Public Sector. 3 TGD peeps being yours truly, Jack Metcalfe (VPS) and Rochelle Johnson (corporate) on a panel talking about inclusivity. Good mix – covered needs post-survey, practicalities and experiences in the workplace and areas to tackle e.g. valuing forms of gender expression and unconscious bias e.g. use of language like “soft” skills re skills that might be stereotyped as “female/feminine.” I’ll save the two real winners that happened afterwards (at morning tea) until the end.

Grab the tram and zap across the CBD to Docklands for NAB’s panel with Ruby Susan, Andrea and moi. A good mix with the focus of each being bi, intersex and trans respectively with considerable intersectionality. I learnt a lot about Kleinfleders from Andrea – awesome. And thank you NAB and Inga Phail for specifically having the panel the way it was and ensuring for once that all the BITs were there. J https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/myth-busting-idahobit-day-kristy-macfarlane/?published=t

Thankfully the final stop was literally up the lane to the Bureau of Meterology’s first ever recognition of IDAHOBIT. My friend and colleague Rebecca Dominguez was a late withdrawal; only a partial change of name tag as Rebecca Corson joined Joel Radcliffe and me. A good range of perspectives and people joining from all around our big broad brown land by livestreaming, Pleasing to see strong recognition of how valuing diversity attracts good talent and awareness of the limitations of gender barriers of all sorts. A case of clear skies ahead for the Bureau re diversity (sorry, that was a bi pun). Given Melbourne’s weather, every iota of talent is needed to increase the accuracy of forecasts. J

A breather before heading to the Clyde Hotel for a much needed refreshment (and chicken burger) for the Union chats launch event. A great panel emphasising the need for intersectional thinking and standing together in solidarity (as one might expect at a union event).

A slight grumpy pan moment in contrast to this when checking emails on arriving home. I might cover this next week.

I think of those countries overseas where events were misrepresented by media, protested or shut down including Lebanon, Uganda, Ukraine, Russia and Liberia (amongst others). I reflect on how visibility and connectedness will still be needed as basics for some time to come. In that light, two highlights sum it up.

After the formal proceedings at DEWLP, two people came up to me. One was a person who heard myself and other bi people speak at a Department of Health and Human Services Victoria IDAHOBIT panel 2 years ago where the focus was bi. I copped flak at the time for stating people come to bi orgs first not so-called LGBTI organisations that may not be close to the grass roots re bi. She told me she went back to her office directly afterwards and heard two colleagues making biphobic remarks. She had the tools to put them in their place. Any pain from flak dissolved. More importantly, shows, sharing info definitely works.

Definitely the biggest moment of the day was the person who I saw out of the corner of my eye was wanting to have a quiet word (tissues/hanky ready here). They (using pronoun in way of gender not known) mentioned how much having trans visibility meant to them. They work in the VPS and are sorta of OK that if transition is needed it will be OK. But being just at the cusp, they are still a little shaky.

Their voice cracked a little, a few quiet tears began.

Sally: “Would you like a hug?”

“Yes” came the reply.

We hugged.

(I heard from someone at the union event who works for VPS that a summary of the panel was distributed and someone else was similarly boosted. Yes.)

We’re gonna need visibility and connectedness for some time yet. May 17th and all the other general and specific days for the rainbow are a major tool in in achieving that visibility and connectedness. Long may we mark these days.

On 17th of May, the Embassy of Argentina in Armenia hosted PINK Armenia’s President Nvard Margaryan and Executive Director Mamikon Hovsepyan on the occasion of International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. They took part in the raising of the rainbow flag symbolizing LGBT people on the embassy building.
The Ambassador of Argentina in Armenia Gonzalo Urriolabeitia has expressed solidarity with LGBT people, saying: “The rights of the LGBTI people are human rights, and the human rights are the rights of LGBTI people. On the occasion of May 17th, International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, the Embassy of the Argentine Republic in Armenia ratifies its commitment to human rights and diversity, reaffirming the equal rights of all people and the fight against all the forms of discrimination, racism and xenophobia. Likewise, it is in solidarity with civil society organizations, which work around the world to demand the fundamental freedoms of LGBTI people to live in a dignified and free way. Therefore, the Embassy of Argentina in Armenia lifts up the rainbow flag commemorating this day.”
The Embassy of Germany in Armenia also addressed the day by posting a rainbow flag image on their Facebook page and by sharing the statement of Ambassador Botschafter Matthias Kiesler.
“Today is the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. The federal government is committed to fight the discrimination against LGBTI people in the world. Human rights include the right to freedom of sexual orientation. The path of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people’s equality was long and challenging in Germany. The equality of rights was not only defined through legal framework but also it has enriched our society. My gratitude to all those people who promote tolerance and fight against discrimination.”
On 16th of May, the British Ambassador to Armenia Judith Farnworth hosted LGBT activists, and on 17th of May made a statement calling upon to respect the human rights of LGBT people, saying: “The strongest, safest and most prosperous societies are those in which all citizens can live freely, without fear of violence or discrimination, and where all citizens, including LGBT people, can play a full and active part in society. Every person should have a fair opportunity in life. No one should face discrimination through unfair laws, policies and practices. No one should be subjected to hate speech, violence or harassment based on discrimination. Representatives from minority groups should have equal opportunities to participate in political and public life, including in positions of leadership and influence. ”
The US Embassy also joined the cause by posting the rainbow flag picture as a cover photo on Embassy’s Facebook page.

Joint EU-Armenia press release on the 9th Human Rights Dialogue

On 16 May 2018, the EU and Armenia held the 9th round of their regular Human Rights Dialogue in Yerevan. This was the first EU-Armenia regular meeting following the election of the new Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia.
The EU and Armenia reiterated their commitment to the common values of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. These values underpin the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement signed on 24 November 2017 and unanimously ratified by the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia on 11 April. The EU confirmed its readiness to work together with the new Armenian Government and to offer its support in these crucial areas.
The EU and Armenia discussed, inter alia, electoral reform, freedom of assembly and freedom of expression and gender equality, as well as labour rights. On electoral reform, the EU recommended amending the legislation bringing it in line with international recommendations and commitments undertaken by the Republic of Armenia prior to the early elections.
It was stressed by both sides that freedom of assembly is a universal and fundamental right of all. The EU welcomed the peaceful nature of recent protests and the general restraint shown by all sides, and inquired about the status of those who had been detained. The Dialogue highlighted the importance of a free and pluralistic media environment and political pluralism as a prerequisite for the conduct of democratic elections.
Armenia reconfirmed its commitment to the adoption of a comprehensive anti-discrimination law in line with international standards and to establishing a national equality body under the Human Rights Defender’s office. The Armenian Government will hold interactive public hearings with civil society organisations to ensure effective implementation of the National Human Rights Action Plan. In the area of labour rights, Armenia indicated that it planned to reform the system of labour inspection to comply with international standards, including with regard to working time, wages and workers’ rights.
The dialogue allowed for an open, constructive exchange on the human rights situation in Armenia. In line with its policy, the EU had prior to the dialogue met and consulted representatives of Armenian and international civil society. The meeting resulted in operational conclusions with concrete actions that will be monitored and followed up over the next year.
The EU reconfirmed its readiness to provide financial and technical support to Armenia, necessary for continuing the reforms aimed at further strengthening democratic institutions and human rights.
The Armenian delegation was headed by Mr. Garen Nazarian, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, while the EU delegation was led by Mr. Dirk Schuebel, Head of Division for bilateral relations with Eastern Partnership countries at the European External Action Service.
