Mr Mahjoubi, 34, a rising star in President Emmanuel Macron‘s centrist government, tweeted late on Thursday that homophobia “sometimes forces us to adapt ourselves and lie just to avoid hate and to survive”.

France has seen a rise in homophobic physical attacks for the second consecutive year, a recent report suggests, with a gay rights charity saying it shows prejudice against the LGBT community is becoming “anchored” in French society.

“Homophobia is an ill that eats away at society, invades high schools, and poisons families and lost friends,” wrote the former tech entrepreneur.

While Mr Mahjoubi said he did not want to “make a big deal” of coming out publicly, “if that might help to fight homophobia, I’ll do it”.

“I think it’s important to offer visibility to gay people, but I think everyone should take this step only when they’re ready for it,” he told the Franceinfo news website.

But he intimated that he had suffered from homophobic attitudes in the past. “We have to remember the consequences of homophobia in daily life, notably for the young. It has also had consequences for me,” he said.

France legalised civil partnerships for gay couples in 1999 and then same-sex marriage in 2013.

Mr Macron’s government includes a few junior ministers who opposed gay marriage before it passed into law.

Mr Mahjoubi said he had broached the subject with them, telling Franceinfo: “I spoke to them about my husband, who is a wonderful man, as soon as I met each of them.

“It was important because we were part of a new movement and we had to set out how we were going to do this together,” he said.

“But I can assure you that for each of them, including comments that might have been awkward at the time, there’s no issue. They are totally committed to fighting homophobia and today they totally support equality.”

Very few ministers in previous French governments have come out as gay or bisexual. The most recent was Frederic Mitterand, nephew of former president Francois Mitterand, in Nicolas Sarkozy’s administration.

To mark the Day, 30 leading French media and news agencies, amongst which major national daily “Le Monde”, sports daily “L’équipe” and leading agency “MediaPart” signed an anti-homophobia Charter, committing to fair coverage of LGBT diversities and total equality for LGBT staff.

The French organisation Comité IDAHO, which focuses on mobilising around May 17 in France, has supported the mobilisation programme of the organisation Le Refuge, which specialises in providing shelters for homeless young LGBTI people in several cities in mainly France and also in the Indian Ocean French island of La Réunion. Le refuge has made the IDAHOT week their key annual mobilisation and fundraising moment.

Still in the French territory of “La Réunion” in the Indian Ocean, a rally took place in the island’s capital city.

The national anti-homophobia project “SOS Homophobie” also traditionally invest the IDAHOT week with a loaded programme of action, including the presentation of their annual report. Check out details and local actions here

In Paris, Saturday May 16th saw a rally on the Human Rights Plaza, facing the Eiffel Tower. The rally was organised by Amnesty International, Ensemble contre la peine de mort (together against death penalty) and SOS homophobie and focused specifically on the death penalty against homosexuality. See the event’s FB page for details

On May 17 itself, still under the Eiffel Tower, UK artist Paul Harfleet organised a Pansy Project Flashmob

Another Paris rally on the day focused on the convergence of social struggles. Migrants, homeless people, people living in extreme poverty and people living with HIV joined the LGBT community to discuss exclusion processes. Visit the event’s FB page for details

Paris

Giant flag at the Eiffel Tower. Organisers advised, “In Paris, we will make a great Rainbow Flag on May 12 the court of human rights. Participants each held one end of a strip of fabric 6, one for each color of the flag. While six participants remain at the starting point, the side of the Place du Trocadero, others walk towards the Eiffel Tower, down in each band, which form the flag. The idea is to have the Eiffel Tower in the background, so that participation in the global video is very characteristic. The operation is feasible to 12 participants, but it would be more effective if people would join the operation as and, apparently spontaneously, giving the “Flahsmob” side. For more info email contact@dayagainsthomophobia.org

The French umbrella organisation Inter-LGBT is also organising a massive free concert in central Paris, on the place de la Bastille, where citizens traditionally celebrate all victories, on May 17th to mark the need to re-engage massively in the fight against homophobia. The recent debates on same-sex marriage have been used by conservative factions to whip up a moral panic and instigate hatred and fear, which has resulted in a wave of attacks on people and vandalism of LGBT establishments. More details expected soon // email contact@dayagainsthomophobia.org
