A number of organisations across Italy this year helped mark IDAHOT 2016 with events, actions and campaigns all held to celebrate the day.

National LGBT group Arcigay held a number of events across the county. In Palmero a lecture was held at the City University on discrimination in the LGBT community. In Vincenza, the local branch held a public event aimed at addressing discrimination, stigma and marginalisation.

The group also used the day to launch its annual report on LGBT-phobias. The report highlights the difficult situation facing the Italian LGBT community, largely caused by the mixed legislation that allows same-sex marriage but fails to provide adequate protection against discrimination and hate crimes.

Italian Christians also marked the day, for the tenth consecutive year, with a number of vigils and public worships held in sites across the country.

Italy

Italy was witness to one of the strongest mobilisations for IDAHOT 2014, in Europe and worldwide. Actions took place in at least 15 cities, and countless topics and communities were the focus of activities around May 17 this year. Progressive voices of faith and individuals joined in prayer, reflection and remembrance in 14 towns and cities, as part of a Global Interfaith Prayer Initiative for IDAHOT 2014. The project ‘ddl405′ launched a video and public call for anti-transphobia and anti-intersexphobia messages to support their campaign. In the north of Italy a local youth organisation brought more than 500 people together to hug a UNESCO monument, amongst many other events.

Global Interfaith Prayer Initiative

For many years now, the Global Interfaith Prayer Initiative, organised from Italy by Gionata, an Italian Project addressing Faith and Homosexuality, and with the support of the European Forum of LGBT Christian Groups, has taken place throughout the period around May 17 in various cities in Italy, and other countries. The focus of the vigil is to commemorate the victims of homophobic violence and discrimination. At the same time, organisers and participants also stand up and speak out against prejudice within the Church. The events were organised by local churches and groups, and took place in the following cities in Italy this year:

May 12: Bologna
May 15: Florence and Palermo
May 16: Padova, Parma, Pistoia and Rome
May 17: Borgo Priolo, Catania, Forano Sabino, Licata, Mantova, Pecara, Pinerolo, Rome, Torino and Trieste
May 18: Rome, Florence, Grosseto, Licata, Milan, Naples, Padova, Rimini and Trapani
May 20: Genova
May 22: Milan

The vigils and commemorations are set to continue in Italy until June 13 and will include Palermo, Livorno and Cremona.

Campaign ddl405

On the occasion of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, the project ddl405 has launched their campaign video for the draft bill DDL405 to put forward to the Parliament. The bill would protect the rights of Italian transgender and intersex people, making a series of changes to the current legal framework.

The claims are to
– stop forced surgery for transgender people to enable them to legally change their name and gender;
– ease off the bureaucracy and relieve the expenses of transition;
– prevent the unconstitutional annulment of marriage in case one of the spouses changes their legal gender;
– end mutilating surgeries on intersex infants.

You can watch the ddl405 campaign video here (launched May 15):

The initiative also invited people to send in their message against Transphobia and Intersexphobia with a picture which was then published on their Facebook page.

Here is a message from Francesca Cellini, a candidate for city council in Bagno a Ripoli:

LGBT Training in Torino

On occasion of the IDAHOT 2014, the LGBT Office of the city of Torino carried out training sessions about gender identity and sexual orientation, as part of a national strategy to sensibilize state officials and police forces.

This year is particularly important for our LGBT Office as the City of Torino, as national Secretariat of RE.A.D.Y, the Italian Rainbow Cities, Provinces and Regions, has been assigned by the national Government the meaningful task of translating in concrete actions the objectives and measures of the national LGBT Strategy.

Top level trainings on LGBT topics have already been carried out for the national Police and Arma dei Carabinieri high rank officials in April 2014 while other top level trainings are going to be hold for CEO belonging to the Minister of Labour and Regions.

Locally, the LGBT Office held its first LGBT training in the jail of Ivrea, a city nearby Torino, on gender identity and sexual orientation in detention. The session addressed police officers, psychologists and social assistants of the Penitentiary Police working in the LGBT section of the prison of Ivrea. LGBT transsexual/transgender persons are likely to experience a double suffering in detention: restrictions of freedom, and restrictions in specific areas of prisons. “Our training focused on sexual identity, applicable law, good practice for the management of transsexual/transgender and homosexual persons in jail aiming at their social and professional reintegration in society,” the organisers explained.

Further details about the national strategy are available here.

This will be the 8th annual edition of the initiative which, in just a few years, has blossomed into a truly international demonstration of solidarity, and has become a key feature of the global May 17th commemorations. People of faith from all different religions, spiritualities and denominations are welcomed to join the call, by holding vigils or other services, joining in prayer or other ritual observance.

A statement announcing the call from Gionata group now follows:

Also this year, during the week before the 17th of May – the International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia (IDAHOT) – many vigils of prayer will take place in several Italian cities, European and South American countries to remember the victims of homophobia.

The project involves an increasing number of groups of homosexual believers, Christian communities (Catholic, Waldensian and Baptist), many organizations and ecclesiastical groups from several Italian cities. The relationships between homosexual believers and Christian communities have thus strengthened and deepened, producing positive results.

In 2007, 13 groups answered the call, while last year in Italy 22 vigils were organised. For the first time, the ecumenical vigils for the victims of homophobia also took place in Spain (in Madrid, Bilbao, Murcia, Valencia, Ciudad Real and La Coruna), in some South American cities and in Munich (Germany).

It’s also important to realize that something is changing in the Catholic Church: for the first time, in 2010, in 6 Italian cities, vigils were held in Catholic parish churches – and among these, in the parish church of Cremona where the bishop, Dante Lanfranconi, attended the celebration and read his homily.

As Italy is a close-minded country about homosexuality, sometimes and in particular at the beginning, it seemed impossible to find a church or a community for a public vigil.

The experience of these years has been positive, and it has displayed that you don’t have to stop knocking at the door, even if at first only few people open it.

Do you remember the bothersome friend the Holy Writ talks about? All you need is a bit of patience and goodwill, bearing always in mind that you don’t want to persuade others or take over the world, but only try to share your hope.

If we did it, others may, too! So, this year again we manage to get together in prayer in our city, in a small or big group and in any case it will be a great result – we will try to display that the Church doesn’t leave out the homosexual Christians of our city.

In spite of all, the Church, or better, the Churches are present, and it is important to remember that God says “don’t call anyone impure or unclean”. [Acts 10:28]

As the organizers say, “If you join us in prayer, the hope sign will be stronger and more meaningful, and we’ll be able to lay firm foundations for a different future when gays and lesbians will be heartily welcome in churches”.

The vigils of prayer to remember the victims of homophobia will be organized in Italy with the support of Gionata, the Italian Project on Faith and Homosexuality, and in Europe with the support of the European Forum of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Christian Groups.

Gionata, an Italian network focussed on questions of homosexuality and faith, has announced that a series of vigils will be held on May 17th, in various Italian cities

Gionata, an Italian network focussed on questions of homosexuality and faith, has announced that a series of vigils will be held on May 17th, in various Italian cities, to remember the victims of hate crimes. Participants will connect with the theme “There is no fear in love”! (1 Jn 4, 18). Gionata’s English language press release, explaining the events and calling out for similar actions, now follows:

In front of such gratuitous violence against homosexuals, and considering the ear-piercing silence of the world; as Christians coming from different confessions and progress of faith, we believe that it is in our duty to give some concrete answer, obviously, we won’t keep silent.

That is why on May 17th we will meet together in several cities of Italy (Rome, Florence, Milan, Naples, Palermo, …) to hold many vigils of prayer to remember the victims of homophobia and to smash in, through our testimony, the wall of silence and embarrassment that usually prevails in our churches and our society about this heavy problem.

On May 17th Catholics, Old Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, etc…: we will meet together in our churches, in our communities, in our houses to launch a yell of hope, in order that all these things come to an end. In this spirit we invite all believers to start vigils of prayer in their communities as a signal of hope.

On May 17th , you too may organize a vigil together with your friends, your group of believers, your family, your community, in your church or house a vigil on the 17 of May in order to share this hope with the others. It is up to you, as Christians, to decide whether it is time to break your silence or not.

The IDAHO Committee invites “all progressive religious voices to use the Day to take whatever action they feel appropriate. We invite all to share information about their plans, so we can share this with the rest of the world and connect like-minded people together, create more momentum, and show the world how vibrant and diverse we are”.

The vigils of prayer to remember the victims of homophobia will be organized in Italy with the support of Gionata, the Italian Project on Faith and Homosexuality, and in Europe with the support of the European Forum of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Christian Groups and the IDAHO committee team.
